Today, March 12th 2026, is a significant day for us all. It marks the official launch of National Bakewell Pudding Day at The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.
We are honoured to welcome Sir Richard FitzHerbert, Bt, our current High Sheriff, who will perform the ceremonial cutting of the giant Bakewell pudding with his sword, expertly prepared by our team of talented bakers at The Bakewell Bakery for this momentous occasion. The pudding has taken
4 hours to prepare and 8 hours to bake.
The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, located in Bakewell, is widely recognised as the birthplace of the celebrated Bakewell pudding. With an annual production exceeding 125,000 puddings distributed worldwide via online sales and in-store purchases. Jemma and Nick Beagrie proudly serve as owners and founders of both The Bakewell Bakery and The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. These distinguished establishments are integral to their growing portfolio of hospitality venues and guest accommodations throughout Derbyshire, all managed under The Beagrie Group.
The historic shop proudly preserves the original secret recipe, which is a closely guarded tradition. While others may attempt to imitate it, this is the only authentic recipe in the world.
We are delighted to invite members of the media and dignitaries to witness this historic event and try
their hand at making their own Bakewell pudding using our secret recipe. We look forward to celebrating with everyone as we unveil this very special pudding.
The morning will begin with refreshments and a delightful selection of sweet treats and pastries; all freshly made from our bakery that morning.
Jemma is particularly thrilled to introduce this event to the national events calendar for the first time, especially since this is where her career began. Jemma started working at the pudding shop as a young student. What started as an early role within the business quickly developed into a lifelong passion for hospitality and a deep commitment to preserving the heritage of this iconic brand.
These formative years shaped her understanding of exceptional customer experience, traditional craftsmanship, and strong community values. She progressed from assistant manager to co-owner, helping to lead and grow the business into the respected hospitality group it is today.
Quote from Jemma Beagrie, Co-Owner and Co-Founder
“This is a historic day for us all, and my husband and I are incredibly proud of our family-run business and the legacy we continue to protect and strengthen. Hospitality has always been at the heart of what we do, creating welcoming spaces, delivering outstanding food made from locally sourced ingredients, and ensuring every visitor leaves with a memorable experience. We are dedicated to preserving the original secret Bakewell pudding recipe, the only authentic recipe in the world.
We are grateful to have been entrusted with a building that holds a special place in the hearts of many. We take this responsibility seriously. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop has been a beloved landmark since 1860, making it the oldest and original source of Bakewell pudding. This very building has been selling the famous Bakewell pudding for over 160 years, using our secret recipe to preserve a delicious tradition that continues to delight visitors from far and wide.
I genuinely love what I do. I feel inspired by the business we have built at The Beagrie Group and take immense pride in our team. We are passionate about employing local people and showing them that hospitality offers genuine, long-term career opportunities, something that is not always highlighted in schools. Developing talent, creating progression pathways, and building confidence in our team are central to our vision for the future.
Our customers and our dedication to the rural community are at the heart of everything we do. We prioritise building strong relationships with our local suppliers and fostering meaningful connections within our community. Today is a moment of great pride for us all.”
We look forward to celebrating this special day for many years to come and ensuring it becomes an integral part of Bakewell’s rich heritage for future generations.
